Wheat and Oilseeds Breeding Centre

Current global food production will need to increase by 70 percent by 2050, placing huge pressure on agricultural land and water resources. New technologies must be developed to help farmers become even more efficient and sustainable and support them in meeting the challenges ahead.

In 2014, Bayer officially opened our A$14 million state-of-the-art Wheat & Oilseeds Breeding Centre at Longerenong in the Wimmera region of Victoria.

The focus of the Centre is on developing wheat and oilseeds varieties with higher yields and productivity improvements to advance Australian agriculture.

The Wheat and Oilseeds Breeding Centre is a long-term investment that will increase the productivity of Australian wheat farming through the development of new wheat varieties with improved yields, enhanced abiotic stress tolerance, fungal disease resistance and better nutrient uptake by plants.

Local wheat breeding programs are expected to yield results for Australian farmers within the decade.

The Centre contributes Crop Science's global network of wheat and oilseeds breeding stations situated in France, USA, Ukraine and Germany.

We are proud to say that we have been active members of the Wimmera community for over a decade through the commitment of our local oilseeds breeding program.

Around 20 employees work at the Centre.

Our partnerships with the Victorian State Government, Longerenong College, Skillinvest, Wimmera Development Association and the Horsham Rural City Council have - and will continueto - enhance opportunities for the local community and for the agricultural industry in the Wimmera region and in Australia.
