Crown rot can have a devastating impact on crop yields when at high levels and in suitable conditions, but a new broad-spectrum fungicidal seed treatment is fortunately showing powerful protection against the disease for growers.

Western Australian agricultural adviser Grant Thompson, Director of the Geraldton-based Crop Circle Consulting, Research and Agronomy business, said the disease was quite seasonal, being more prevalent in drier years and wheat-on-wheat rotations.

“Crown rot certainly pulls yields back. I have seen in really bad years that it can take 50% off crop yields,’’ Grant said.

“In combination with drought, in the worst paddocks with the disease I have seen some crops that have not been worth harvesting. It’s amazing how potent it can be at high levels.

“In good seasons, crops don’t hay-off as much due to the disease, but you can still find a lot of areas with trace levels of crown rot and it can be knocking a tiller or two off plants. Unless you know what you are looking for, you may not know that it’s there.’’

Grant managed a fully replicated seed treatment trial against crown rot in wheat on red loam soil at the Mingenew Irwin Group’s site east of Mingenew last season. The trial included applications of the new seed treatment fungicide, EverGol® Energy, and also compared it with an existing seed treatment, Rancona® Dimension.

EverGol Energy, which builds on the strong reputation of EverGol Prime from Bayer, combines the proven disease control strengths of penflufen with the systemic activity of prothioconazole and metalaxyl in a low dust formulation.

As a seed treatment, it offers control or suppression of a wide range of diseases including fusarium head blight and seed borne crown rot in wheat and barley; loose smut, rhizoctonia, pythium and crown rot (natural field infestation) in wheat, barley, oats and triticale; flag smut (seed and soil borne), common bunt and white grain disorder (seed borne) in wheat; and covered smut in barley. EverGol Energy can also be applied in-furrow for suppression of crown rot and pythium in wheat, barley, triticale and oats, allowing growers additional flexibility.

After inoculating the disease-free site near Mingenew with crown rot, seed treatment applications in the trial included EverGol Energy at 130 mL/100 kg of seed and 260 mL/100 kg of seed, compared with Rancona Dimension at 320 mL/100 kg of seed and untreated plots. These treatments also received a foliar fungicide application with propiconazole at 500 mL/ha at the end of tillering. Another treatment in the trial included EverGol Energy at 260 mL/100 kg of seed followed by a foliar fungicide application with Aviator® Xpro® at 300 mL/ha at the end of tillering.

Grant said during the season, the improved crop development where the seed treatments were applied was noticeable, including improved emergence, excellent vigour and good biomass production.

“The Rancona (Dimension) treatment looked okay, but it definitely was not as strong as the EverGol (Energy) treatments. They were slightly thinner and there was a lot less grain in some of the heads that had been affected,’’ he said.

It was an above average season in the region, with good opening and growing season rainfall before a slightly drier than normal finish.

Final grain yields in the trial included 3.69 t/ha for the higher rate of EverGol Energy and following Aviator Xpro treatments, compared with 3.41 t/ha for the higher rate of EverGol Energy and following propiconazole applications. The lower rate of EverGol Energy achieved 3 t/ha and the untreated plots that were inoculated yielded 1.96 t/ha.

Bayer Customer Advisory Representative Matt Willis said whiteheads caused by crown rot were highest in the untreated plots at 3.2%, while the higher rate of EverGol Energy on the seed reduced whitehead expression by 74%.

Matt said the higher rate of EverGol Energy and Rancona Dimension treatments also achieved AUH2 grain quality specifications due to reduced screenings.

The highest return on investment in the trial was recorded by the higher rate of EverGol Energy and following Aviator Xpro application at $877/ha. Matt said there was some septoria nodorum disease in the trial and the Aviator Xpro-treated plots appeared to be less affected compared with the propiconazole applications, which may have contributed to additional grain fill.

Grant said the results with EverGol Energy were very good and he already had recommended the new seed treatment fungicide to growers who faced crown rot concerns.

He said the full label rate of EverGol Energy applied to seed would be an easy, convenient application for many growers.

Leigh Nairn, Landmark Northampton, who viewed the trial at Mingenew, said crown rot was becoming an issue in the northern agricultural region and growers were looking toward using EverGol Energy particularly with cereal varieties that were more susceptible to the disease.

Leigh said it was a solid season last year despite rain not falling until later in May and the dry conditions in September, however he did see some crown rot disease in some drier areas.
